These two pairs of cut and rough stones come from Chief Mountain in Pala, California. This shows both primary colors of spodumene found on Chief Mountain–the deep purple kunzite from the Oceanview Mine, and the yellow-green triphane from the Pala Chief Mine. The kunzite crystal measures 62 x 33 x14 mm and weighs 42.4 grams. The cut kunzite measures 17.8 x 13.4 x 11.5 mm and is 21 carats. The triphane crystal measures 35 x 33 x 17 mm and weighs 23.6 grams. The cut triphane measures 17.4 x 12 x 7.1 mm and is 10.5 carats. The stones were faceted here in Los Angeles by a master lapidary who is very experienced cutting spodumene; due to its perfect cleavage, its a difficult stone to cut, but the results are well worth it.
