In 2007, there was a find of rubies and very unusual ruby-sapphire combination gems (both red/pink and blue) in Winza, Tanzania. While the rubies were the most desired gems mined here, I personally have a fondness for unusual gems–like this one, one of the unique particolored sapphires from this locality. The main body of the gem is a magenta pink although in some lighting it will show flashes of a more orangey-pink color. There are some striking patches and zones of a purple-blue color as well–that’s what makes this gem truly unique and one of a kind. This sapphire has slight inclusions that are just barely visible to the naked eye. The inclusions have been factored into the price, making this a great value for the size and color. While we didn’t have this gem heated, we have to assume it may have been heated right at the mine site, as many of these gems were.
This sapphire is faceted in our custom “Hyperbola” brilliant oval design, created and optimized for sapphire; the result is a glittering beauty of a gemstone. It weighs 1.38 carats and measures 7.2 x 6.1 x 4.4 mm, the perfect size for an engagement ring.
