Description
The color of this sapphire is hard to describe properly as it shifts with the lighting. In daylight its a dark red with hints of orange and pink, while under incandescent light it shifts to a dark hot pink to magenta color. Its likely some labs would call this a ruby based on the depth and intensity of the color. The gem is from the Umba River Valley in Tanzania and it completely untreated and natural. Like most of the sapphire from the Umba Valley, it has some very fine inclusions and they give this gem a slightly “sleepy” appearance in some lighting. I faceted this in a custom oval shape; the gem weighs 1.81 carats and measures 7.93 x 6.73 x 4.62 mm.
