The Oceanview Mine in Pala, California is the most recent gem mine to open in the Pala Mining District. In the last decade its produced pockets of remarkable deep purple kunzite, aquamarine and morganite, a wide variety of tourmaline colors, and some beautiful quartz. This light golden-brown quartz falls somewhere between the yellow of citrine and the browns of a darker smoky quartz–a color sometimes referred to as “smitrine” in reference to this intermediate color range. The gem weighs 11.15 carats, and measures 16.1 x 11.9 mm; it was cut to fit a calibrated 16 x 12 mm mount. It was custom-faceted by master gem cutter Peter Torraca.
