Description
This gorgeous unheated Ceylon sapphire is a beautiful light cornflower blue–one of the most desirable hues for a sapphire. Sri Lanka (formerly called Ceylon) is famous for its gemstones, especially sapphires. The government has maintained regulation over mining to prevent large-scale environmentally destructive mining from occurring, encouraging small-scale artisanal mining. This sapphire was acquired directly from a mine owner in Sri Lanka and selected for maximum beauty and brilliance. There is one tiny crystal inclusion visible in macro photos, but it is not visible without a loupe–this is an eye-clean gemstone. Large clean unheated sapphires like this one are quite rare! It comes with a Gemological Institute of America report indicating that it is natural and untreated and with their opinion that the origin is Sri Lanka (Ceylon). The report number and our logo and internal SKU number are both laser-engraved on the girdle.
The sapphire was originally cut in Sri Lanka but has been recut to improve the brilliance; the shape is best described as a rectangle cushion or rectoval. It weighs 4.17 carats and measures 9.8 x 7.7 x 5.9 mm. It would make the perfect gem for a unique engagement ring!
