This unusual heated Montana sapphire is a mix of yellow, green and blue–what’s referred to as a “parti-colored” sapphire. The color was developed by heating the gem in Montana, but no other treatments were made to the gem. The treatment is permanent and stable and not only develops the color, but also improves the clarity. The gem has some internal feathers, including one near the center that can be visible when the gem is tilted. That said, its still a very bright and flashy gem in the hand, and very large for Montana–only a handful of gems mined each year are large enough to create a gem this size. I have factored the inclusions into the price of this gem, making it a good value for the very large size and rarity.
This sapphire is faceted in my custom “Aurora” brilliant square cushion design that I’ve designed and optimized for sapphire; the result is a glittering beauty of a gemstone. The gem weighs 5.04 carats and measures 8.9 x 6.8 mm. It would make an amazing center stone for a unique and one-of-a-kind engagement ring.
