This beautiful unheated Montana sapphire is a rich deep bluish-green color, reminiscent of the color of the needles of a spruce tree. There is a moderate amount of golden-colored rutile silk in this gem, but its not objectionable in the hand. It can flash a golden sheen at times, and under a loupe or microscope its very beautiful. There is one tiny feather that can also flash at some angles, but again, its not objectionable in the hand. While I could have heated this sapphire to improve the clarity and change it to a deep blue color, I preferred to keep it in its natural form. Sapphires from Montana rarely reach this size–this is very large for this locale.
This sapphire is faceted in my custom “Helena” oval brilliant design that has been optimized for sapphire; the result is a glittering beauty of a gemstone. The gem weighs 5.91 carats and measures 11.5 x 9.5 x 7.2 mm. It would make an amazing center stone for a unique and one-of-a-kind engagement ring!
