This pretty little Montana sapphire is a lovely sky blue color, one of my favorite colors in the El Dorado Bar sapphires. This sapphire has the typical fine rutile needles of an unheated sapphire that can cast a silvery flash in certain lighting. The macro photo shows the rutile far more prominently than it can be seen in the hand–you can’t see this much silk without a 10x loupe or a microscope. In the hand the gem looks extremely bright and and flashy.
I faceted this sapphire in a modified version of the classic diamond round brilliant design that I’ve optimized for sapphire; the result is a glittering beauty of a gemstone. I put a tiny culet facet on the gem to remove a natural flaw; it’s so tiny that in the hand its not easily seen without a loupe. The gem weighs 1.56 carats and measures 6.7 x 4.4 mm; the perfect size for an engagement ring.
