This beautiful unheated Montana sapphire is a lovely light aqua blue color. The crystal was cylindrical, with the long axis of the crystal on a-axis, which on this sapphire was a pale greenish blue, while the c-axis–on the ends–was a slightly more bright blue. Normally I try to cut all of my sapphires on the c-axis for the best color, but that would have been too wasteful in this case, so I cut it on the long a-axis. Because I cut it on the a axis, the ends of the gem bring in the slightly darker blue of the c-axis while the center shows the pale blue a-axis. The gem shows flashes of various shades of blue as its tilted in the hand and the effect is quite beautiful.
This sapphire is faceted in a custom radiant rectangle design; the resulting gem is very bright and lively in the hand. There are a few tiny natural inclusions and a light amount of natural rutile silk visible in the macro images, but they are too small to see in the hand without a 10x loupe–its an eye clean gemstone. It weighs 1.76 carats and measures 7.0 x 5.3 x 4.6 mm. It would make an amazing center stone for a beautiful engagement ring!
