This beautiful unheated Montana sapphire is the classic Montana sapphire color–a lovely blue-green. Like most Montana sapphires, it shifts color with the lighting, appearing more blue in daylight and greener under incandescent lighting. Fluorescent lighting gives imparts a slightly gray hue to the blue-green. This sapphire has a light amount of silk that gives it a bit of a soft glow. This actually has the advantage of making it appear brighter in low light conditions, as the rutile silk catches any light and bounces it around inside the gem, illuminating it. While I could have this gem heated–which would turn a rich deep blue color–I like this effect and prefer the natural untreated state in my gemstones.
I faceted this sapphire in a custom brilliant oval design that I created just for Montana sapphire. I’ve named the design “Testudo” as the facet pattern of the crown reminds me of a tortoise’s shell. This gem is fairly large for a Montana sapphire, most of which are smaller than 1.5 carats: it weighs 2.42 carats and measures 8.3 x 6.2 x 5.6 mm.
