Description
The Stewart Mine in Pala, California was famous in the past for the immense quantities of fine pink tourmalines mined from its depths. First discovered over 100 years ago, it rose to prominence in the early part of the 20th century, supplying tourmaline to the Dowager Empress of China. When she passed away and the Boxer Rebellion ensued, the Chinese market for tourmaline collapsed and the mine became inactive for a long time. Apart from some smaller-scale mining done in the 1960’s and 1970’s the mine has been largely inactive, only being worked intermittently on a very small scale. This gem comes from some of that recent hand mining; this rough was mined around 2008 from a small pocket. I managed to acquire most of one of the miner’s shares from this pocket and have faceted a small number of gems from this material.
This beautiful gem is a rich bubblegum pink color–a classic California tourmaline hue. It’s been faceted in my custom “Helena” brilliant oval design. The resulting gemstone is bright and lively in the hand and really shows of the gorgeous color of the tourmaline. The gem is moderately included, but the inclusions are all so tiny that they don’t effect the brilliance of the gem in the hand very much. It looks much better in person than the magnified photo would imply. The tourmaline weighs 3.12 carats and measures 9.9 x 8.0 x 6.6 mm.

Although we do our best to take the highest quality images, sometimes it can be difficult to envision how it will look on your hand. We can take a video of up to four gems side by on the hand to help you compare them and see how they perform in daylight. Please provide the following information, and include the SKU numbers or links to the stones you would like to see a video of.
Please note that we don’t do 360-degree videos as colored gems are optimized to be viewed face up, and because the current technology is such that none of the 360-degree systems we have tested provides the accurate color. Our desire is to present the most honest and accurate color possible!
