Frequently Asked Questions

General

We are primarily an online business, and we do not have a retail storefront. We do offer private appointments to see gemstones in our office located in Exton, PA. The majority of our jewelry is made to order, so only the pieces in our Ready-To-Wear section are available for viewing. Appointments are limited to customers who will have us create the jewelry to go with the gem you select and are available between 9AM – 3 PM EST, Monday through Friday. Showings are limited to 6 gems at a time. If you would like to schedule an appointment, please contact us. We also offer a risk-free review and return policy if you can’t make it in for an in-person meeting.

Yes! Please note that all of our prices are listed in US dollars and do not include any taxes or duties you may be assessed at import, including VAT, tariffs or duties. The cost for international shipping is calculated on your exact shipping address and order value at checkout. See our international return policy here.

We realize that our customers buy their gems and jewelry when the moment is right for them, and you shouldn’t have to wait to see if there will be a sale. Rather than just mark items up so we can run sales, we list every product at our best price every day, and never run sales. We do offer a discount for active-duty military and first responders; if this applies to you, get in touch and we’ll provide a coupon upon proof of service.

Ready-to-wear jewelry is listed on our All Jewelry page and are either ready to ship or are able to be backordered with a short turnaround time.

Made-to-order jewelry pieces are made specifically to fit your chosen gemstone using a jewelry design (or a modified version of a design) from our website.

We do not do holds on gemstones. If you want to lock in your gem and make sure no one else buys it, you can purchase it and ask that we hold it for you while you decide on your jewelry.

Each video request allows you to view up to four gemstones side by side in both natural and incandescent lighting. We typically limit each client to up to 4 video requests to ensure we are able to film and share videos with everyone who requests one in a timely manner.

We accept online payment in the form of credit cards from VISA, MasterCard, Discover and American Express.  We also offer financing through Affirm.  You may also contact us to arrange payment via bank wire.

Orders for gems and ready-to-wear jewelry placed by 3:30 PM EST, Monday through Thursday, will ship same day. Orders placed outside of that window will be shipped the following day- with the exception of orders that are placed after the cutoff on Thursday, which will be shipped on the following Monday. We are closed Saturdays, Sundays, and on most United States federal holidays. If you need your package to arrive on a particular day, please leave a note on your order or contact us so we can arrange it.

Made-to-order and custom-made jewelry is typically complete within 4-6 weeks. After you place your order, one of our designers will be in touch to confirm the details and to provide an expected completion date. If you need it to be completed by a certain date, please let us know as soon as possible so we can do our best to accommodate it. If you need a piece completed sooner than 4 weeks, we do offer a three-week guaranteed rush for a $400 fee if we have room in our schedule. Contact us prior to your purchase to discuss expedited production.

All orders valued over $1,000 are eligible for free FedEx Overnight shipping, which should arrive to you the day after we ship it.

About Our Gems

All of our loose stones are accompanied by our certificate of authenticity stating the species, origin, treatment status, carat weight, etc. You can read a little more about our certificates here. We guarantee that they are 100% as stated and that GIA or one of the approved major labs (SSEF, GRS, Lotus or AGL New York) will confirm gem species and treatment status or we will refund all costs. We don’t guarantee origin on our non-Montana sapphires as none of the major labs will guarantee origin and instead will only state it is “their opinion.” We are also happy to send off your gem after you purchase it to GIA for a report at cost (typically about $200-300 including shipping); keep in mind that this will add a 3-4 week delay in shipping your order if you request it.

We have complete sophisticated gem laboratory in our office that includes all of the equipment you would find at a high-end lab such UV-VIS-NIR and FTIR spectrometers. These allow us to use the exact same tools and methodology as any major lab when testing our gemstones, and is why we can 100% guarantee our results will be confirmed by GIA or any other major laboratory.

We only sell natural gems that were mined from the earth. We do not sell any man-made or lab-grown gemstones. Any treatments will be fully disclosed on the gem’s product page and the accompanying certificate of authenticity.

There is no official grading system for quality, color, or clarity in colored gemstones like there is for diamonds. Letter grading that you might see online (for example “AAA” etc.) is arbitrary and completely made up by the vendors that use it— there are no letter grade standards established by any authority in the colored gemstones industry. Apart from their arbitrary nature, these systems also generally assume that some colors are somehow of a better “quality” than others— when in reality color has nothing to do with quality. Color is a personal decision, and while some colors are more desirable than others, that doesn’t necessarily make one color any higher quality.

We believe the best and most honest approach is to clearly and accurately describe the color and inclusions in our gems and to only use unaltered color-accurate photos for selling our products. We strive to accurately describe the color of every gem and our images are taken with a color-calibrated professional camera system so that what you see is close to what you will see in person; we do not do any image manipulation to enhance the appearance of our gemstones. We describe the clarity of our gems in a consistent fashion using similar terms to what are used for diamonds, but keep in mind that they are not identical to diamond clarities. You can learn more about how we describe and grade our gem clarity here.

Heat treatment is a permanent and stable process that improves the color and/or clarity of a gemstone. We love completely natural, unheated gems and keep as many that way as possible, but heat treatment allows many more gems to have spectacular color and clarity. Sapphires, for example, are nearly always heat treated; a rich blue color would become astronomically rarer and more expensive if this wasn’t the case. You can read more about heat treatment in sapphire here.

We aim to create the highest-quality engagement rings. In order to ensure heirloom quality, we only recommend the most durable gems for use in an engagement ring: sapphire, diamond, alexandrite, or spinel. You may opt to use other gemstones, but be aware that they may accumulate scratches and abrasions over time.

Yes! Learn more about our eco-friendly and ethical sourcing here.

Occasionally we are able to source stones if we don’t have anything comparable. Contact us with more information about your project and we can let you know for sure.

We do not offer custom cutting of gemstone rough or commissioned cutting. Gemstone rough is rare and almost always very expensive; miners have spent a lot time and hard work to source this material. Part of what we believe to be ethical about gemstone sourcing is not being wasteful. That means we only cut the very best possible shapes and sizes we can from rough, working within the limits of what nature has provided us.

About Our Jewelry

Ready-to-wear jewelry pieces are either ready to ship or can be backordered with a short turnaround time. We have limited ready-to-wear rings available, but most of our necklaces, bracelets and earrings are in stock and ready to ship within 24 hours.

Made-to-order jewelry pieces are made specifically to fit your chosen center gemstone using a jewelry design (or a modified version of a design) from our website.  The majority of all of our rings are made to order, created just for your gem. These items are available with our standard build time, which ranges from four to six weeks.

Fully custom-designed jewelry pieces are made specifically to fit your chosen center gemstone using a jewelry design created specifically for you.  The typical time to create a custom piece will depend on how quickly you can approve your design. Most customers will spend a week or two going back and forth with their designer to solidify the design; once that’s been finalized and the invoice paid the ring will be made in our standard four to six week build process.

Yes! Email us at [email protected] with more information about your project and we can discuss pricing.

Unfortunately, we do not work on jewelry pieces that were not originally made by us.

Yes! You are welcome to purchase gems from us and take them to a local jeweler. If you select one of our sapphires, we recommend ensuring your chosen jeweler is an expert in working with natural sapphires.  We do strongly suggest you work with our jewelry team, though. We are experts in creating jewelry for colored gems, and because our gems are cut in our custom designs, our team can create a piece of jewelry that is a perfect match for your gem.

We do occasionally work with client-provided center stones like heirloom diamonds; however, there are some client-provided gems we will not work with. Contact us at [email protected] with more information about your project and we can let you know for sure.

Please note we do not provide insurance appraisals for jewelry incorporating client-provided diamonds or gemstones without an original sales receipt for the diamond or gemstone; for diamonds, we also require a GIA report for an appraisal.

We do not use pre-made jewelry settings; each piece of our jewelry is created specifically to fit the exact gems used. Therefore, we do not have any “blank” settings available for viewing, nor do we sell settings without a center stone.  In limited cases we will work with an outside gemstone; contact us to learn more.

While we don’t list diamonds for sale on our website, we are happy to source one for you and set it in one of our ring designs, or create a custom ring for you. Our prices on natural and lab diamonds will be extremely competitive with anything you can find online.

We prefer to use natural diamonds in our jewelry, and we source them from a supplier that strictly adheres to the Kimberly Process, which certifies conflict free diamonds and focuses on ethical sourcing in their entire supply chain.

We are able to source lab diamonds for you if you desire, however, it will not change the price of the setting. The majority of the cost of the material comes from the labor required to facet it, and there is a negligible difference between natural and lab-grown diamonds. It will also depend on the exact setting(s) you are considering— many of the fancy-shaped diamonds (other than round) are not possible to find as lab-grown.

We do not work with moissanite.

Canadian diamonds are considered the most ethical and eco-friendly due to the strict environmental and labor regulations of that country’s industry. We can source Canadian diamonds in some shapes and sizes to use in our rings. The use of Canadian diamonds in your piece will require a small additional fee.

We only use ethically sourced (Kimberley Process) natural diamond melee and side stones in our jewelry. While imperfect, the Kimberley Process does ensure a good deal of transparency into the sourcing for natural diamonds.  Nearly 100% of all lab diamonds are manufactured overseas with zero transparency into the labor practices and using primarily dirty coal-fired power in China, so we avoid sourcing them for our jewelry. On top of this, at the small sizes of most melee nearly all of the cost is the labor to cut the stones—giving lab diamonds only a minor edge in affordability.  Rather than supporting factories in China and India, we prefer using natural diamonds that support the countries and communities that depend on diamond mining to provide a living.

We have many wedding bands to choose from— listed here.

If you’d like to see how different wedding band styles pair with your engagement ring, we’re happy to create renderings for your review. To begin, we require a nonrefundable $200 design fee, which will be applied toward the final cost of your wedding band purchase. This includes up to three renderings featuring wedding band styles listed on our website or one rendering featuring a custom wedding band design created specifically for your ring. Contact your designer or email us at [email protected] to get started.

Please note that additional renderings beyond the initial three are available for a fee of $100 per round for wedding band styles from our existing collection and $300 per round for fully custom wedding band designs.

Customizing Jewelry

Every gemstone purchase includes complimentary design services to help you explore your options, including one fully custom design concept. Additional custom design concepts or major redesigns are available for an additional $300 per design.

The final cost of your jewelry is based on the materials and craftsmanship required to create the finished piece, the same way the designs on our website are priced.

Yes! Since each of our pieces is made to order specifically for you, it is easy to make any adjustments you’d like.

Up to two rounds of renderings are included with your gem purchase, giving you the opportunity to review the design and request modifications before moving forward with production. Usually, our designers can capture your vision within those 1-2 rounds, but any additional rounds of revisions and renderings are $100 each.

Yes, we offer engraving. There are limits to the number of characters that can be used depending on the size and style of the ring. The standard fee for engraving is $50 for up to a dozen characters in your choice of block or script fonts. Contact us at [email protected] to discuss further.

Metal Type

We offer 14K white, yellow, and rose gold; as well as 18K white and yellow and 20K pink gold. 14K gold alloys have a slightly lower pure gold content, making them the most affordable option for heirloom-quality metals. 18k white and yellow (as well as 20K pink, which is a special alloy meant to improve on 18K rose which can be prone to brittleness) have a slightly higher pure gold content, making them slightly richer in color and slightly softer overall. All of our white gold is rhodium plated. For a bright white metal that doesn’t require plating, platinum is an excellent and super durable option. Learn more about how to choose a metal for your jewelry here.

Our focus is heirloom-quality fine jewelry made with gold and platinum; we do not make jewelry with silver.

All of our white gold jewelry is rhodium plated. Because white gold is made with real gold, which is naturally yellow, it will always have a slight yellowish tinge to it. We follow the standard practice in the industry of plating white gold with rhodium to give it a bright white finish. Rhodium plating can wear off over time and need to be redone. You may request no plating on your piece if you prefer. For a bright white metal that does not need plating, we highly recommend platinum.

Returns, Exchanges, and Cancellations

Loose gemstones and ready-to-wear jewelry are returnable in original, unworn condition within ten business days for a full refund. Completed made-to-order or custom-designed jewelry may only be eligible for exchange. See our full return policy here for more details.

Yes! See our full review and return policy here for more details.

Restrictions apply based on whether your piece was ready-to-wear, made-to-order, or custom-designed. See our full review and return policy here for more details.

Orders for loose gemstones and ready-to-wear jewelry can be cancelled before shipment for a full refund. Requests for cancellation after a loose gemstone or piece of ready-to-wear jewelry has shipped will be considered a return and subject to our returns policy.

Orders for made-to-order and custom-designed jewelry can be easily changed or canceled up until the piece “goes into production”, i.e., you approve the finalized design, and the piece is sent to casting. A small restocking fee may apply if we spent a significant amount of time on your project prior to cancellation. After your piece goes into production, any cancellation requests will be considered a return and subject to our returns policy. At this point, some changes to your order may incur additional fees.

Caring for Your Jewelry

We provide a cleaner and care guide when your jewelry is shipped so that you can properly care for your jewelry. We recommend removing jewelry when undertaking activities such as cleaning, exercising, and gardening that may cause damage. You can soak your jewelry in the cleaning solution provided for at least 15 minutes once a week to help prevent residue buildup.

In addition to weekly at-home cleaning, we recomment a professional cleaning and inspection once a year. We offer a complimentary service (exclusive of shipping fees) to thouroughly clean and inspect your jewelry. Read our Jewelry Care & Cleaning guide here for more details.

We are happy to resize any jewelry you purchase from us. Any jewelry with a total cost over $5000 (gem and setting together) is eligible for one free resizing in the first six months after you purchase it (subject to some conditions contact us for details). All other jewelry— as well as jewelry past this six-month mark— is subject to a $200 resizing fee plus the cost of shipping. Please note, the cost may be slightly higher for higher-cost rings in order to provide full insurance coverage on the shipping. In order to retain our lifetime manufacturing warranty on our jewelry you must have it resized by us. Contact us to arrange for your resizing— we generally will have your ring back to you within one week!

Warranty & Repair

All of our jewelry comes with a lifetime warranty against manufacturing defects, such as porosity in a casting. Damage to your ring and/or gemstone through normal wear and tear is not covered and will be subject to repair charges estimated upon examination. We strongly recommend that you insure your jewelry with coverage for wear and tear damage.

If you believe that your jewelry has a problem requiring warranty service, contact us to get a return shipping label. Once we have received and examined your piece, we will let you know whether there is a service charge or if the repair will be covered under warranty.

We provide a free insurance appraisal with all of our jewelry. The appraisal will come via email and includes a link to have your jewelry insured with our preferred partner Jeweler’s Mutual. You can, however, use the appraisal to insure your jewelry with your own insurance company- or as an alternative, we recommend BriteCo. Given that jewelry is worn every day and will be subject to wear and tear, we recommend you select coverage that will include repairs and not just coverage for loss and/or theft.

Appraisals for retail replacement value are provided complimentary with all jewelry valued over $1000. You will receive your appraisal via email, typically within one to two weeks after your piece is delivered. If you don’t see it, simply reach out to us and we can make sure to resend it to you.
