Description
This unheated Ceylon sapphire is a lovely rich blue tinged with violet. The gem is 100% natural and untreated in any way. It was sourced directly from a mine owner in Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka (formerly called Ceylon) is famous for its gemstones, especially sapphires. The government has maintained regulation over mining to prevent large-scale environmentally destructive mining from occurring, encouraging small-scale artisanal mining. This gem has excellent clarity, making it bright and scintillating in the hand. There may be tiny inclusions that are visible only with a 10x loupe. There is a slight amount of natural rutile silk that can flash in certain lights, but it’s not objectionable and is proof positive of its unheated nature.
The sapphire has been recut in the United States to improve the brilliance; it is faceted in a concave faceted pear-shaped design by award-winning artist Derek Katzenbach. It weighs 1.38 carats and measures 7.5 x 5.4 x 4.4 mm.
