Description
Spinel has long been underappreciated as a fine gemstone, after spending centuries being confused with sapphire and ruby–and for good reason, as they are nearly identical in brilliance and dispersion. Spinel is slightly less hard than sapphire, but still hard enough to be a durable gem, as it’s also quite tough; it’s suitable to be used in everyday jewelry.
This spinel is a lovely deep greenish blue. The gem is 100 percent natural and untreated in any way. This spinel was acquired directly from a reputable gem dealer; it is represented as being from Burma. It has excellent clarity, making it bright and scintillating in the hand. There may be tiny inclusions that are visible only with a 10x loupe.
This spinel was faceted outside the United States in a classic oval design; there is some very minor windowing in the center which only barely affects the brilliance. It weighs 1.55 carats and measures 9.0 x 6.8 x 4.1 mm.
