Description
This unheated Ceylon sapphire is a rare color change gem: it’s a blue-violet under daylight (first photo), while under incandescent light, the color changes to a true purple (second photo). The gem is 100 percent natural and untreated in any way. It was sourced directly from a mine owner in Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka (formerly called Ceylon) is famous for its gemstones, especially sapphires. The government has maintained regulation over mining to prevent large-scale environmentally destructive mining from occurring, encouraging small-scale artisanal mining. This gem has excellent clarity, making it bright and scintillating in the hand. There may be tiny inclusions that are visible only with a 10x loupe.
The sapphire was faceted outside the United States in a classic emerald cut design. It weighs 1.66 carats and measures 6.6 x 6.2 x 4.4 mm.
