Description
This unheated Ceylon sapphire is a beautiful cornflower blue–one of the most desirable hues for a sapphire. The gem is 100 percent natural and untreated in any way. Sri Lanka (formerly called Ceylon) is famous for its gemstones, especially sapphires. The government has maintained regulation over mining to prevent large-scale environmentally destructive mining from occurring, encouraging small-scale artisanal mining. This sapphire was acquired directly from a mine owner in Sri Lanka and selected for maximum beauty and brilliance. It has very small inclusions that are quite difficult to see with the unaided eye from a normal viewing distance. The inclusions have been factored into the price, making this a great value for the size and color.
The sapphire was originally cut in Sri Lanka but has been recut in the United States to improve the brilliance; it is faceted in a classic brilliant oval design. It weighs 4.09 carats and measures 10.3 x 7.8 x 6.2 mm.
