This beautiful sapphire comes from Kaduna, Nigeria. Most sapphire rough is shaped such that ovals, rounds or cushion cuts are the best approach–very few are shaped such that a trillion is the best cut. This Nigerian sapphire was an exception, and I took advantage of it by faceting it in one of my custom trillion designs specifically optimized for sapphire. The design has cut corners, making it easier for a jeweler to set. The color of this gem is a very rich deep blue tinted with green. In low light it can appear very dark but shows flashes of deep blue; in daylight and brighter light it is a gorgeous deep blue showing flashes of bright blue. There is a slight amount of natural silver rutile silk in one corner that is only visible at certain angles and in certain lighting–proof positive that its natural and untreated.
The gem is fairly large at 4.73 carats; it measures 9.6 mm across and 6.8 mm deep. It would make a superb center stone for a unique ring or pendant.
