One of the first gemstone discoveries in the United States was tourmaline–first found there in 1820. In the late 1800’s Maine tourmaline was made famous by Louis Comfort Tiffany, as he featured it in many of his custom jewelry pieces. In 1972 there was a famous find on Plumbago Mountain in Newry, Maine that produced a large amount of watermelon, pink and stunning blue-green tourmalines. While most of this material has long been cut and sold, small amounts of rough stashed away decades ago still turn up; these gorgeous Maine tourmalines are very hard to find and highly sought after by collectors. The small selection we are able to offer here came from a collection of rough stored away for over 40 years.
This stunning tourmaline is a rich mint color–a beautiful shade of green tinted with blue. The gem is 100 percent natural and untreated in any way. It has excellent clarity, making it bright and scintillating in the hand. There may be tiny inclusions that are visible only with a 10x loupe. This tourmaline is faceted in our “Testudo” brilliant oval design and cut to high precision; the result is a glittering beauty of a gemstone. It weighs 1.13 carats and measures 7.5 x 5.8 x 4.5 mm.
