Description
This stunning Mahenge garnet is a beautiful peach pink color, like a fine “Padparadscha” sapphire. Under incandescent light the color shifts to a more pure bright pink. The garnet comes from a recent find outside Mahenge, Tanzania, which has become highly sought after due to the bright open colors and dispersion of the gems found there. These garnets are in very limited and diminishing supply and the prices for the rough have increased dramatically in recent months; since sometime in 2018 the supply appears to have been all but exhausted. They have outstanding brilliance and dispersion that gives them a beautiful fire in the hand. The peach pinks like this one were always some of the rarest colors from Mahenge, and very few were larger than 2-3 carats, making this an exceptional example.
This gem is very clean and the high clarity makes it a scintillating gemstone in the hand. It is faceted in a classic square cushion design, and cut to high precision by master lapidary artist Peter Torraca. The gem weighs 5.09 carats, and measures 9.1 x 9.1 x 7.1 mm.
